Sense of urgency needed at Stoke

Keane plays down Class of '92 impact

Roy Keane believes keeping the Class of '92 will not guarantee Louis van Gaal success if he takes over at Manchester United.

Ryan Giggs is set to be kept on as No. 2 to Van Gaal, who will leave his position as Netherlands coach after the World Cup and is widely tipped to replace the sacked David Moyes. But Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, brought in by Giggs during his period as interim manager at the club, and Phil Neville, who followed Moyes from Everton, have yet to be told of their future.

United legend Keane, however, is unconvinced that his former teammates need to remain in the Old Trafford dugout.

"It doesn't rock my boat," he said at a launch for ITV's World Cup coverage. "People go on about the old Liverpool boot-room and all this, but no it doesn't do anything for me.

"If it guarantees success, I would go for it. But does it guarantee success? No. I don't fall for all that. There have been coaches over the years at United when I was there -- Jim Ryan had the United connection, Brian McClair had the United connection, Mick Phelan was there, and Brian Kidd.

"It is good to have that, but I don't think it is a must-have - particularly if you think you have to have three or four of them because they came through the youth team together. It's about having the right coach, the right dynamics for the staff."

Keane, who played for United between 1993 and 2005, winning 12 major honours, also appeared to have a dig at Neville.

"Moyes brought in Phil Neville and everybody said it was great," Keane said. "I would like to ask Phil what did he bring to the party; and, when Moyes left, why didn't Phil leave with him?"

Asked if Neville should have walked away, Keane added: "I don't know, you would have to ask Phil. But I know what I would have done."
