In a dismal season for United, the Spanish shot-stopper has been a shining light in between the posts at Old Trafford and also picked up the prestigious, fan-voted Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year prize from the club's annual awards ceremony on Thursday night.

"I'm really happy to win this honour," De Gea told United's official website. "I'm very grateful. Sometimes it's important for your teammates to give you confidence and I think they're some of the best teammates you can have.

"I tried to do my best this year and I think it was my best season so far. I felt really good and confident. I will try to do the same for next season."

De Gea, 23, has made himself first-choice at the club this season and has played in 36 of the 37 games in the Premier League, letting in 42 goals.
