Rooney, RVP battling to prove fitness

Wayne Rooney is a doubt for Manchester United's game against Sunderland on Saturday, and interim manager Ryan Giggs is waiting to see if Robin van Persie will be fit to make his comeback.

Rooney, United's top scorer this season, has suffered from both a groin problem and a stomach bug this week but Giggs said the England international is keen to play.

Van Persie, who has been out since March with a knee injury he sustained after scoring a hat trick against Olympiakos, has returned to training.

Giggs said in a news conference: "Robin has been back training -- he has looked good. Whether it is too soon, we will just see.

"A few of the lads have had a bug -- [reserve goalkeeper] Anders Lindegaard has and Wayne has. Wayne has also got a tight groin but with the bug you have to be careful with that because the immune system is down a bit but Wayne being Wayne wants to be involved and wants to play. We will have to monitor it over the next 24 hours."

Rooney scored twice in Giggs' first game in charge, Saturday's 4-0 win against Norwich, when he started in attack with Danny Welbeck.

If he is ruled out, it could allow Van Persie or Juan Mata, who struck twice as a substitute against the Canaries, to come in.

United will face Giggs' former teammates Wes Brown and John O'Shea, who played more than 750 games for the club, as well as another old boy, in Phil Bardsley, on Saturday.

Giggs added: "It is great to see Wes and 'Sheasy' back. They are in really good form. The service they have given to this club will never be forgotten. They were great teammates."
