Giggs could land permanent United job

Ryan Giggs still has a chance of being appointed Manchester United manager on a permanent basis, club sources have told ESPN, although the front-runner remains Louis van Gaal.

Giggs, 40, has taken the job on an interim basis for the last four games of the season, since David Moyes parted company with the club on Tuesday morning.

While the United hierarchy is set to press ahead with plans to formally meet with Van Gaal over the next two weeks, and tentatively sound out other options, there is an open mind as to seeing how Giggs performs during his period in charge.

The multiple medal winner has been reported to want the job, with a view to bringing together a very valuable coaching team that comprises many coaches and former stars to have worked with the club in his time there.

Nicky Butt has already been brought in as temporary assistant, and Giggs would want the influence of a number of players who started with him in the famous "Class of '92" -- among them are Paul Scholes and possibly even Gary Neville.

Old Trafford sources have also insisted to ESPN that “many senior players” would be supportive of the idea.

Much will depend on performance, both in matches and training, and the club hierarchy is still in the early stages of a replacement process.

Although it is likely they will ultimately go for experience, a long-term role for Giggs has not been ruled out.
