Gerrard calls for 'calm' ahead of City

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool can go into next weekend's Premier League title clash against Manchester City with no fear.

Steven Gerrard has said in the Mirror he is aware of the significance of Liverpool's meeting with Manchester City on Sunday but is urging his teammates to "stay calm."

Gerrard scored two penalties last weekend at West Ham to guide Liverpool to a ninth straight Premier League win and put them back top of the table.

The Reds are in the running to earn their first league title since 1990, but England captain Gerrard is taking their challenge one game at a time.

The 33-year-old said: "If you say to me now, 'Beat Man City and you will win the title', I think the answer would be 'Yes.'

"But all it will give us is three more points and that is what we plan to do. There will be four huge games after that.

"I'm not convinced just yet -- we've got a very hard game next week. I think the message is to stay calm.

"We will give everything we can now and every time we go on the pitch we have to leave every ounce of energy and determination out there and that's what we are planning on doing.

"We want this really bad. The team keeps on showing our character and determination and how much we want it."

Meanwhile, defender Martin Skrtel has echoed his skipper's sentiments, stressing the need to remain focused as they look to clinch the five triumphs that would seal glory.

"Things are going well but there is still a long way to go," Skrtel said. "We can't look too far ahead. We need to keep going game to game and now our focus is on getting three points against Manchester City.

"We will look forward to that challenge. We know the atmosphere created by our fans will be amazing. We played well at the Etihad earlier in the season and were very unlucky not to take something from that game.

"We are going into it in great form and we will be doing everything we can to keep this winning run going. It's exciting. This is why you play football -- for a season like this. You want to be up there challenging for titles.

"There are still five games to play and we all want to keep going in this way and extend this winning run. We just need to stay focused and keep working.

"We showed a lot of character and you can see there is a great spirit in this team. Everything is working well."
