Howard: Moyes needs time at United
Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has said in an interview with ESPN FC that David Moyes will be a “huge success” at Manchester United if the Premier League champions give him enough time.
Howard insists Moyes has the work ethic, confidence and ability to bring together the right group of players to succeed at Old Trafford.
United are only seventh in the Premier League, 12 points off the top four, after suffering their 12th defeat of the season when Liverpool beat them 3-0 on Sunday.
But United States international Howard, who played under Moyes for seven seasons at Everton after moving from United, is convinced his former club have the right manager.
“I think this club will succeed and David Moyes here, given the right time, will be a huge success,” Howard told ESPN FC.
“David Moyes never takes a backward step. He always believes that he can do the right things. He believes in his methods, he believes in the players that he brings to a club, and that makes for a really good working environment over a long period of time.”
Howard feels that Wayne Rooney’s decision to sign a new contract and Robin van Persie’s pledge to stay at Old Trafford prove Moyes will be able to attract world-class players to United.
He added: “Absolutely. Anytime you are at club, you want your biggest players in order to attract other bigger players, and they have done that. So I am certain they will have a pretty good summer spending money. ”
Howard said Moyes’ struggles this season have been a consequence of United’s difficult summer in the transfer market last year.
He added: “The teams around them that are competing over the summer brought in five, six, seven players of quality, spent near 100 million pounds, and for whatever reason Manchester United only brought in one player who we know well, [Marouane] Fellaini, but has been often injured this season. So if you do the math, that doesn’t bode well.”
