United deny Wayne Rooney report

Manchester United have denied a report in the Sun on Sunday claiming Wayne Rooney has signed a new contract.

The newspaper claimed Rooney had put pen to paper on a deal worth 300,000 pounds a week that would tie him to the club until 2018.

However, a United spokesman told Reuters: “There is no deal, which is why we haven't announced it.”

Despite the denial, negotiations over an extension are continuing and the BBC reports along with several British newspapers that the 28-year-old is likely to commit to a long-term deal this week.

Meanwhile, Patrice Evra could remain at Old Trafford beyond the end of the season after playing in all but one of the club’s Premier League games this season.

The Sunday Times has said Evra, whose current deal expires in the summer, has triggered a clause in his contract after making 25 league appearances this season that obliges United to offer him a one-year extension.

The Press Association reports that there is a “possibility” the Frenchman will stay put despite having been expected to be part of a summer clear-out.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
