Daniel Sturridge sorry for reacting

Daniel Sturridge has issued an apology to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for his reaction to being substituted in the Merseyside derby victory over Everton on Tuesday night.

Walsh: Liverpool provide Merseyside magic
Tyler: Job done for Liverpool
Bennett: Reds strike at heart of Everton

Sturridge scored twice in the 4-0 win at Anfield, but he missed a penalty and then wasted a further chance when he lofted the ball over the bar after declining to pass to a visibly frustrated Luis Suarez.

After that incident, Sturridge was replaced by Victor Moses, and vented his frustration at the manager’s decision, but he told BT Sport after the match: “I apologise for my reaction.

“I was disappointed by missing the penalty and felt I’d let myself down as well as the fans. The hat trick would have been the icing on the cake and it’s unfortunate. It was nothing to do with the manager, and I’d like to apologise for my reaction if anybody took any offence. It’s not about me, it’s about the boys and a great victory.”

Rodgers added: “He apologised to the group afterwards and it is one of the things I say to the players that you have to respect the team and the club.

“If the manager decides to take you off it’s not always because you are playing poorly. You accept it, you come off the field and if you have a problem then you come and knock on my door and see me the next day.

“What you don’t do is disrespect anybody, whether that’s the fans or your teammates, but he hasn’t done that. He was just disappointed that he missed the penalty, and for me he was outstanding.”

Despite the missed opportunities, Sturridge was named the man of the match for his overall performance and later posted a picture of the award on Twitter.
