City face anxious wait over Negredo

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini cools talk of an unprecedented quadruple this season.

Manchester City face an anxious wait to discover if Alvaro Negredo will be sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Brewin: Relentless City
Curtis: Hello Wembley, old friend

Negredo, City’s top scorer this season with 23 goals, will be assessed on Wednesday to see how serious the problem is. The Spain international fell awkwardly in the closing minutes of Tuesday’s 3-0 Capital One Cup semifinal win over West Ham and spent several minutes receiving treatment before returning to the pitch.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini said after the match: “He has pain at the moment and we will see if it is serious."

Negredo, who joined City from Sevilla in July, scored twice at Upton Park to take his tally to nine goals in his last six games.

However, while City, who face Watford in the FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, could lose Negredo, they welcomed back another striker against West Ham. Stevan Jovetic, who had been sidelined by a hamstring injury, came on as a substitute to make his first appearance for almost three months.

Pellegrini can also call upon Sergio Aguero, who scored City’s second goal at Upton Park, and Edin Dzeko, who was rested, and the City manager added: “I think that now with Dzeko and the return of Jovetic, we are now covered for the next match.”
