A year earlier, the Blues had recorded a profit (of 1.4 million pounds) for the first time in the Roman Abramovich era, a result that was borne out of a desire to come in line with UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) rules.

However, a failure to advance from the Champions League group stage last season took its toll on the club’s accounts, while major outlay on the transfers and wages of players including Oscar and Eden Hazard also had an impact.

Chelsea’s matchday income fell from 77.7 million pounds to 70.7 million pounds, while the descent into the Europa League saw broadcasting income fall from 112.8 million pounds to 105.4 million pounds.

The Blues issued a robust defence of the figures, which show a 19 percent rise in annual commercial income and fail to take into account a new 300 million pound, ten-year kit deal with adidas -- with the club still confident of meeting the FFP requirement of no more than a 37.5 million-pound "deviation."
