Robin van Persie out for a month

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been ruled out for a month with a thigh strain.

United manager David Moyes, whose side have lost their last two Premier League games, confirmed that the Netherlands international would be sidelined.

He said Van Persie had suffered the injury while taking the corner that led to Phil Jones’ midweek Champions League winner against Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"Robin van Persie is out for a month," he said. "He picked up a thigh strain in taking a corner kick which led to the goal."

Moyes said it was "a big blow," adding: "It is unfortunate, because I think if you look at our record with Wayne Rooney and Robin in the team it is actually very good, and we have not had them for quite a period recently.

"Marouane Fellaini has a bit of a back injury. Michael Carrick is missing, and Robin is going to miss four weeks with a thigh strain. That is a big blow to us."

Van Persie featured in all 38 of United's Premier League fixtures last season -- starting all but three of them -- with his 26 goals firing the club to a record 19th league title. This term, he has missed out on starts in five of the champions' 15 league fixtures to date, although he still has seven league goals for the campaign.

Moyes, who was without Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Chris Smalling for the Shakhtar game, said: "I have no doubt it will get better.

"I am sure we have plenty of players who can cover it and we don't miss them too much."

Van Persie will miss Sunday's trip to Aston Villa as well as the busy Christmas period, which sees United host West Ham United before travelling to face Hull City and Norwich City.

After the turn of the year, United are also set to do without last season's top scorer for the home game against Tottenham and back-to-back matches against Swansea City in the FA Cup and the league.

United then face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Jan.19, by which time they could have Van Persie fit again.
