Wes Brown's red card rescinded

Brown has only just returned from an absence of almost two years through injury.
Wes Brown's red card incensed Sunderland

Sunderland have won their appeal against the red card picked up by Wes Brown during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Stoke City.

Randall: Friend the foe

Brown, 33, was adjudged to have committed a reckless tackle on Charlie Adam by referee Kevin Friend, in a decision that incensed both the defender's team-mates and manager Gustavo Poyet.

With the club stating at the time their intention to appeal Friend's decision, the FA have now confirmed a successful appeal from the Black Cats.

Speaking via a statement on their official website, the FA said: "With regard to Brown, who was dismissed for serious foul play during Saturday's game at Stoke City, the claim was upheld. As a result, his three-match suspension has been withdrawn with immediate effect."

The decision means Brown will now be free to play for the Black Cats against Aston Villa on Saturday as the club desperately attempt to climb out of the relegation places.

In a statement on Sunderland's website Poyet said he was delighted with the decision and revealed he'd spoken to referees' chief Mike Riley. "I would like to express my thanks to the panel for giving the matter their consideration," he said.

"Naturally we are delighted with their decision, which is fair and just. I have spoken with Mike Riley (manager of the PGMOL) and whilst the details of our conversation will remain private, I am satisfied with today's outcome.

"Of course it was hugely frustrating to have Wes sent off, but we accept that officials are only human and like everyone, they can make mistakes.

"Having the red card rescinded today goes some way to rectifying the error and we are delighted to have Wes available for Saturday’s game at Aston Villa."
