Pochettino drops Schneiderlin hint

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin could still play for England despite having represented France at youth level, according to Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Rann: Surging Saints soar

Last week saw Roy Hodgson call up the Southampton trio of Jay Rodriguez, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to the England squad, while James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw were also selected for the under-21s.

And Pochettino has revealed that Schneiderlin, 24, could be the next player from the club to be rewarded by Hodgson for his form this season if the French Football Federation fail to act quickly enough.

The former Strasbourg man has previously represented France at every level from under-16 to under-21.

However, the Saints boss feels the Three Lions could offer Schneiderlin a senior cap ahead of Les Bleus as he can qualify to represent England by virtue of the residency rule, as he has lived in the country for five years.

"It does surprise me [he hasn’t played for France] because he's a player that does have the same quality as the players that have been called up,” Pochettino said in the Daily Mail.

“He is a player that has amazing quality and I am 100 percent sure it will happen. He needs to keep on working with the same humility, the same work ethic and it's a matter of time until he will get that call-up.

“The only thing I would say to the French Federation is they should be careful because he might be able to play for England.”
