Heitinga, Kone to miss Tottenham game

John Heitinga and Arouna Kone are set to miss Everton’s Premier League home game against Tottenham on Saturday through injury.

John Heitinga may be part of a summer exodus at Everton
John Heitinga's season has been interrupted by injury.

• O'Farrell: Composure and class

Defender Heitinga, who has yet to make a league appearance this season despite being a regular on the bench, is back in training after a recent groin problem.

Striker Kone, signed from Wigan for 6 million pounds in the summer, missed last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Aston Villa with a knee problem.

Martinez told Everton’s website: "Johnny Heitinga is recovering really, really well. He has progressed as we expected over the weekend but is possibly ahead of the time we set for him.

"He is going to train today individually and then we hope he will join the group at the end of the week, so we will see how quickly he can join the match-day squad.

"Arouna Kone had a really nasty incident against Hull City late in the game and that has swollen his knee. So we are going to assess him over the next two or three days and see the extent of the problem.

"I think the Spurs game may be too early for both of them but it is still early in the week.

"Everyone else is back to where they should be."

Midfielder Darron Gibson remains Everton’s one long-term injury absentee, having suffered cruciate knee ligament damage during the Republic of Ireland’s 3-1 win over Kazakhstan on Oct. 15.

Gibson had surgery last week Tuesday, and will begin rehabilitation with the aim of returning before the end of the season.

Centre-back Antolin Alcaraz, a summer signing who has yet to play a competitive game for Everton because of hernia, groin and hamstring problems, is likely to be fit in time for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool on Nov. 23.
