Pardew: Cabaye can be captain again

Yohan Cabaye's spectacular 30-yard strike gave Newcastle the lead against Liverpool.

Alan Pardew believes Yohan Cabaye can once again captain Newcastle United after his summer of discontent.

Cabaye, 27, was enveloped in a transfer saga that saw him linked to a number of clubs including Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. Of the three, only Arsenal submitted a formal bid for Cabaye, which was rejected outright by the Magpies.

With a transfer beginning to look less likely towards the end of August, the former Lille midfielder asked not to be considered for selection by Pardew. Eventually returning to the first-team fold, the incident left something of a mixed reaction among Newcastle fans, with both cheers and boos awaiting the Frenchman upon his return.

Believing fans are now over his summer saga, Pardew also feels there is still an opportunity for the Frenchman to become the Magpies leader once again. "I don’t think he needs to do that (keep performing to win over the supporters) in the fans' eyes," Pardew told the Northern Echo. "We are over that. But, again, with the captaincy I thought 'hmm, not quite right just yet' but I am sure he will be captain of this club at some point going forward.

"He was magnificent against Liverpool, a real class act and he keeps reminding us that he is a special player and that is why you get interest from clubs like Arsenal because of the quality that he’s got.

"He was left out of France’s game on Tuesday and I know he was disappointed not to start that game. The World Cup is not far away and he is inspired to show the French manager (Didier Deschamps) how good he is and I am sure he will have watched the Liverpool game and been very impressed."
