Pardew predicts top 10 finish for Toon

Alan Pardew is confident Newcastle United can still finish in the top 10 despite an indifferent start to the season.

Alan Pardew had little to smile about on Monday as Roberto Martinez's Everton beat his Newcastle side 3-2 on Monday.

Duffy: First half too poor

The Magpies began the season brightly with seven points from their opening four games. However back-to-back 3-2 defeats against Hull City and Everton have seen the club slip down to 16th in the Premier League.

Having skirted close to relegation last season, Pardew is desperately attempting to avoid a repeat performance this season.

"I think we still have a chance of the top 10," Pardew told the Northern Echo. "As a team we have shown inconsistencies, especially in our defending. Some of the goals we have conceded this year really are not good enough for us.”

With Pardew frustrated by his side’s defending in recent weeks, Monday night saw another poor showing from the Magpies’ back four. Losing 3-0 at half time against Everton, the club’s traveling support chanted ‘we want our money back’ at Pardew and his players.

Mike Williamson, who was introduced at half-time in place of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, shored things up in the second half and Pardew confirmed the former Portsmouth defender is in line for a start at Cardiff City this weekend.

"The consistency of performance individually and as a unit -- the back four -- we will have to do some work and there will have to be some personnel changes in there,” Pardew said. “I thought Mike Williamson came on and we looked a lot stronger and he has given himself a great chance of featuring at Cardiff.

"With the fans traveling all that way and seeing some of the defending in the first half I can understand it," he added. “But I hope at the end they see they have something to cling on to in terms of the pride we showed in the shirt. It wasn't just about digging in and making some tackles, we showed some quality in the second half and that will serve us going forward."
