West Ham fans warned about chants

West Ham have urged their supporters to refrain from anti-Semitic chanting ahead of this weekend’s Premier League game against Tottenham.

West Ham have warned their fans about potential unsavoury chants ahead of the game against Tottenham.

• Crace: The Y-word debate

In the corresponding fixture last season an investigation was launched by the Football Association following hissing noises made by West Ham fans intended to reference the gassing of Jews in concentration camps during the Second World War.

The Hammers are expected to issue an official statement later in the week outlining a zero tolerance approach, while the club’s co-owner David Sullivan has already spoken out.

"Supporters know where myself and the club stand on this issue," he is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

"We sincerely hope that a tiny minority of our supporters do not let us down. We are the only club that remembers the Holocaust each year and we have many Jewish supporters of our own.

"Sadly a few supporters, think it’s funny to sing anti-Semitic songs and make anti-Semitic gestures.

"They need to realise in 2013 that it’s not acceptable."

Tottenham are already fighting the use of the term ‘Yid’ by their own supporters in an attempt to clamp down on the use of offensive and discriminatory language at their games.
