Evans: City loss not our lowest point

He's played the fixture more than any other person. But Ryan Giggs shows no signs of shying away from what he once called United's greatest rivalry.

Jonny Evans insisted Manchester United did not hit rock bottom after their derby defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Payne: United bounce back

The Northern Ireland international said he has experienced a worse mood at the Premier League champions’ training ground than the feeling on Monday, the day after their 4-1 thrashing by their local rivals.

Defender Evans did not play at the Etihad Stadium but returned to the United team for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup win against Liverpool, and he told MUTV: “I have been on the training ground where the atmosphere has been worse than it was when we came in the day after the game.”

Evans admitted United deserved their heavy defeat to City and said the players had been quick to accept their failings.

“We had no complaints at the weekend,” he said. “Everyone was honest in their assessment that we didn't apply ourselves the way we should have. It is hard for the fans, the players and the manager as well. We just had to move on from it quickly.”

After beating Liverpool, United have been drawn at home to Norwich in the last 16 of the Capital One Cup and Evans is already dreaming lifting silverware.

“This is a competition that we take seriously,” he added. “Early in my career here it was the first trophy that I won and it’s one we’d be proud to win again.”
