Jermain Defoe thrilled with goals record

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has spoken of his pride at having risen to fifth in the club’s all-time top-scorer list after scoring twice in the 4-0 Capital One Cup win at Aston Villa on Tuesday.

Jermain Defoe puts Tottenham into the lead at Villa Park.
Jermain Defoe struck twice against Aston Villa.

Defoe, 30, edged ahead of 1930s great George Hunt as he bagged his 138th and 139th goals for Spurs at Villa Park.

And the England international, who has had to play second fiddle to Roberto Soldado this season, said he is honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the club’s legends.

“If someone would have said to me when I first walked into Spurs that I’d be in the top five all-time goal scorers in the club’s history, I would have probably said ‘are you being serious?’” Defoe told the club’s official website.

“I look at all the great players in the top ten and to be fifth, it’s a dream. I’m trying not to think about it too much as it’s a long season, but of course it’s at the back of my mind every time I go on the pitch because I want to score. It’s something special and I want to keep it going.”

Defoe is now Tottenham’s leading scorer this season with his six goals coming in cup competitions.

And Spurs manager Villas-Boas has admitted his second-choice striker is doing all he can to claim a regular starting spot.

“Jermain is doing extremely well, ticking all the right boxes,” Villas-Boas said. “It was once again a great performance for him [at Villa]: Two goals, one assist, available for the team, great spirit. I think you have to give him credit for what he has done at this club.

“This is why I say we are very comfortable with the striking options we have available here. Soldado is a top international, Jermain also, and we have so many other attacking options as well. This is why I could field such a strong team for Villa, even though we played just two days before in the Premier League.”

Jimmy Greaves is Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer with 266 goals.
