Five reasons why Koeman failed

Ozil reluctant to be drawn on Madrid row

Arsenal new boy Mesut Ozil insists he is ignoring questions about his professionalism following his departure from Real Madrid and is now focused solely on life with the Gunners.

A recent article in Spanish newspaper ABC claimed Perez told senior Madrid club members that Ozil had been allowed to leave in a £42.4 million deal as Los Blancos had become fed up with the player’s unprofessional off-the-pitch behaviour.

Madrid have been swift to deny those accusations were made, however, and the Germany international said in his first press conference at Arsenal that he has not being paying attention to the stories.

“People who know me know how professional I am,” Ozil said. “They see how many games I played [for Real Madrid], people will know that you don’t play so much if I am not professional. I have new goals now in London and I want to talk about those.

“I don’t want to say anything about Real Madrid because I have three wonderful years there, I have great friends, we achieved a lot, won some trophies. That’s why I don’t want to talk.

“I am not disappointed by the exit from Madrid. I am at one of the biggest clubs in the world, I will go my own way now. I had good moments in Madrid and you can see the reaction of the fans and the players that they didn’t understand the move.

“I have made the next step, in the strongest league in the world and I have to prove myself here and continue to develop here. I am at the right club.”

Ozil went on to describe the frenzied activity that surrounded his deadline-day move to Arsenal, as the transfer was wrapped up just ahead of the transfer window closing.

“It was a very interesting last few days,” said Ozil, who previously suggested he had no intention of leaving Real Madrid heading into the final weekend of the summer transfer window.

“I spoke to Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, asked them about this club, how the people were here. I’ve only heard positive things. This is a very familiar club, a very successful club with young players, young players who develop here. That is why I came here. To improve myself. I’m really happy to be here working with such a great manager.

“That was most important for us. What he thinks about me, what his plans are for me. That is why I decided to come to Arsenal, that I have the trust here. He told me what he thinks about me and that is why I chose Arsenal.”
