Rodwell confident of convincing boss

Jack Rodwell believes he has to prove himself all over again to win the trust of new Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The England international midfielder has yet to feature for the Chilean and was not even on the bench for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Hull City.

Rodwell was a £12 million signing by former manager Roberto Mancini but Pellegrini has spent £30 million on another midfielder, Fernandinho, who has become a first choice -- and left the 22-year-old determined to show what he can do.

"It’s a little bit like starting again when a new manager arrives and you have to win him over," Rodwell told the Daily Star. "But that’s the same for everyone. The previous manager Roberto Mancini brought me here, and obviously I was a little bit sad to see him go but that’s football."

Rodwell endured an injury-hit first season at the Etihad Stadium and his City career began badly when he gifted Southampton and Borussia Dortmund goals with poor passes.

But he went on to impress in a victory against Chelsea and arguably his best City performance came under caretaker manager Brian Kidd on the final day of last season, when he scored twice in the defeat to Norwich.

Now he hopes to show that form for Pellegrini, whose arrival has motivated the whole squad, he believes.

"Obviously Manuel Pellegrini is a great manager and I’m happy to see him come in as well so everyone is in that position where they want to win him over and I’m no different," he added.

"I think everyone feels it’s a fresh challenge more than anything. Everyone has come in and is trying to win the manager over which has brought a new lease of life."
