Conte culpable in uneven season

Aguero: City must learn from failures

Sergio Aguero believes Manchester City must admit and accept their own shortcomings if they are to avoid repeating the mistakes of last season.

Going, going, Kun
Aguero has highlighted the Champions League as a key point of improvement.

The Argentina international feels City have to be honest with themselves about where they went wrong as they failed to retain their Premier League title and finished bottom of their Champions League group in the 2012/13 campaign.

Aguero scored the goal that made City champions in 2011-12 but they came 11 points behind Manchester United and the forward is adamant he and his team-mates have to take responsibility for a disappointing campaign.

He said: "Acknowledging where we went wrong is the first thing we must do to solve any problems. It's our duty to recognise our mistakes and then not to repeat them again."

City were runners-up in both the Premier League and the FA Cup, losing the final to underdogs Wigan.

Aguero added: "I think the end result was fair because we didn't play our best, and that's what hurt the most. We failed when we should have been at our best."

City have yet to reach the last 16 of the Champions League, enduring two difficult campaigns after being drawn in tough groups. And Aguero said: "We also have to learn from our past two experiences in the Champions League that saw us getting eliminated fairly quickly. We didn't enjoy that at all, but that’s what should motivate us."

While City suffered an early exit in Europe last year, their new manager Manuel Pellegrini helped Malaga reach the quarter-finals, which encourages Aguero that he can repeat that success with the English club.

"I really hope that Manuel Pellegrini, who has proved he can take teams into the latter stages in Europe, will bring the best out of us this season and take us as far as possible in the competition," the former Atletico Madrid player said.
