Schalke 'eye Lukas Podolski move'

Schalke have set their sights on Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski with general manager Horst Heldt travelling to London to negotiate a deal, according to reports.

Podolski, 28, joined the Gunners from Cologne last summer, but regularly found himself being substituted during his debut Premier League campaign, while he appears to have lost his place in Arsene Wenger’s side this term.

The Germany international was linked with a return to the Bundesliga by media reports on Thursday -- with Schalke and Wolfsburg believed to be interested.

And Gerald Asamoah, former Germany international and Schalke legend, told Sport1: “Poldi is a great lad, he’d fit in at Schalke. He would be a hit.”

But while Wolfsburg general manger Klaus Allofs reportedly denied the speculation to kicker, according to Rheinische Post, Heldt flew out to London to force through a transfer.

Podolski’s agent, Kon Schramm, however, told Rheinische Post: “I never comment on such rumours.”

The Royal Blues, who drew 1-1 with PAOK Salonika in their Champions League play-off first leg on Wednesday, could struggle to pay the transfer fee.

Bild reports that the Bundesliga side want to take Podolski on loan and hope that Arsenal will continue to pay part of his salary.
