Rio Ferdinand aims dig at Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand has told Chelsea that their visit to Old Trafford is not Manchester United’s biggest game of the season.

Rio Ferdinand is more excited about playing Manchester City and Liverpool than Chelsea.

• Payne: Uncertainty for Jones

The Blues travel to Manchester on Monday night for the Premier League’s most eagerly-anticipated clash of the new campaign so far.

However, the veteran defender believes matches against Manchester City and Liverpool are more important for both him and the supporters.

"It [Chelsea] is not my favourite game," said Ferdinand, speaking as United announced a partnership with Apollo Tyres.

"You look forward to playing every time at Old Trafford. It is a special place to play and we all appreciate that we can play there in front of our home fans and we try to put on a show.

“You’ve got your closest rivals, Liverpool and Manchester City, that are hyped up that bit more than against anyone else, so winning that kind of game is probably the biggest of the season."

It is the second time this week that Ferdinand has targeted Chelsea with his comments.

After Blues boss Jose Mourinho had suggested United were unconvincing champions last season, the 34-year-old branded the statement as “his [Mourinho’s] first sound bite of the season”.
