Trending: Huddersfield reach Premier League

Henderson embracing competition

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson insists he is prepared to continue fighting for his place after playing a full 90 minutes in the win over Stoke on Saturday.

Jordan Henderson was on the scoresheet at Steven Gerrard's testimonial.
Henderson started for Liverpool at the weekend.

Henderson appears to have firmed as a first-choice midfielder for Brendan Rodgers after a difficult last season at Anfield.

The England Under-21 international was believed to be part of a bargaining deal with Fulham for the sale of Clint Dempsey, but resisted overtures from other Premier League clubs and asserted his place in the starting line-up.

An impressive start to the year led to more playing opportunities and while he is not entirely sure if he can expect to be on the pitch when the first whistle blows each week, Henderson is committed to helping to lift Liverpool.

"It is always nice to play, I am sure that is the same for everyone," he said. "But we are a squad and there will be times when other people come in and I have to keep fighting for my place and hopefully stay in the team.

"The most important thing in your first game of the season at home is to win the game and that is what we got.

The 23-year-old believes Liverpool's attack must improve after they missed a host of chances in the 1-0 victory over Stoke, but praised goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who made an impressive Premier League debut for his new club.

"We had a lot of chances and we should probably have put it to bed a lot earlier but it wasn't to be and the most important thing was to win the game," he added.

"I thought Simon was brilliant with two brilliant saves at the penalty and the follow-up after that. That was magnificent. He was brilliant at Sunderland when I was there and he has been brilliant since he came into the club and he will get stronger and stronger and he will be fantastic for Liverpool."
