Medel joins Cardiff in record deal

Chile international Gary Medel has joined Cardiff for a club record fee in excess of £8 million, with the deal subject to the 26-year-old getting a work permit.

Gary Medel was unusually a double goalscorer
Medel spent two years at Sevilla.

Medel's move was announced just a day after he featured in Sevilla's win over Manchester United.

The midfielder spent two years at the Spanish club, where his form allowed him to establish himself in the Chile set-up.

Cardiff confirmed they paid a club record for Medel, meaning he cost more than the £8 million they recently paid for former Tottenham defender Steven Caulker.

"We're delighted to have secured the services of Gary - a tenacious and intelligent international midfielder," Cardiff manager Malky Mackay told the club's official website. "Having had two seasons of regular football in La Liga - with 60-dd international caps to his name and three appearances at a World Cup - his experience will be an invaluable asset to our squad.

"He's played in a number of Boca v River Plate derbies in Argentina - one of the world's biggest derby matches - and I've no doubt that his background and pedigree will complement our midfield group in the Barclays Premier League."

Medel will meet up with his new team-mates after Chile's friendly against Iraq on Wednesday.
