Jozy Altidore: I can emulate AZ form

Jozy Altidore believes he can replicate his fine Eredivisie goalscoring record with Sunderland following his summer move from AZ Alkmaar.

The United States international scored an impressive 31 goals last season for AZ, with his form subsequently earning him a £6million move to Sunderland last month.

No stranger to the Premier League following a loan-spell with Hull City during his teens, Altidore feels he has arrived on Wearside a more polished player following his stint in Dutch football.

“I’m very excited to be back in the Premier League,” he told the Sunderland Echo. “I’m delighted to have this opportunity and I just can’t wait for the league to get started.

"I think I just became a better player in Holland, than the one when I was at Hull. “On and off-the-ball and linking up with the players around me, I just got better. It’s that simple. I’ve become a much more confident player since then.

“The two leagues are completely different, but we’re trying to play football which looks good and hopefully I can score some goals.”

Representing one of eight first-team arrivals at the Stadium of Light this summer, the off-season has represented significant change for the Wearsoders under manager Paolo Di Canio.

Admitting to some difficulty in adjusting to so much change, Altidore also said he has been impressed with some of the new arrivals in particular.

“It’s been difficult with bringing so many players in,” he said. “But we’ve been working on a lot of different things. There’s a great bunch of guys here. (Emanuele) Giaccherini is a very good player and Cabral has been doing some good things.

“We’re all committed to having good times this season. [Stephane] Sessegnon is a top, top player. There’s no doubt about it. And Connor [Wickham] is a very good player too. I think we have a lot of good options there and hopefully [Steven] Fletcher will be fit soon too.”
