Trending: Pogba to seal Man United return

Phil Jones unfazed by rivals' spending

Phil Jones has claimed Manchester United are not worried by their rivals’ spending sprees – despite David Moyes’ wait to make a major signing.

Manchester United haven't had a player as versatile as Phil Jones since Brian McClair
Jones is a versatile member of United's squad.

• Payne: United's top transfers

Manchester City have paid around £90 million to bring Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic to the Etihad Stadium while Chelsea, who have recruited Andre Schurrle, Marco van Ginkel and Mark Schwarzer, have also been busy in the transfer market.

But United’s only additions are Wilfried Zaha, whose move from Crystal Palace was arranged in January, and Uruguayan youngster Guillermo Varela.

Manager Moyes has seen bids for Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas and Everton’s Leighton Baines rejected while Thiago Alcantara preferred to join Bayern Munich.

But England international Jones professed himself unconcerned by the deals other clubs have struck, saying in The Guardian: "I don't think the lads are too bothered who the players are that other teams are signing. It's totally irrelevant, we're just concentrating on ourselves and we know what to do.

"The new season [will be] interesting. Teams have got new managers, I'm sure if we're anywhere near what we were at the start of last season then we'll be fine."

Jones was speaking after United suffered their second defeat under Moyes, losing 3-2 to Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos, and said: “Tonight wasn't clever but I'm sure we'll have a good start to the season.”
