Bardsley expecting Sunderland exit

Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley says he is likely to leave the Stadium of Light this summer and is hoping for a swift exit.

Bardsley, 28, joined the Wearsiders from Manchester United in 2008 after loan spells with Rangers, Burnley, and Aston Villa among other clubs.

But the full-back is now ready to move on and is a hopeful of a quick resolution to his future with a handful of Premier League sides, including Stoke City, believed to be interested in signing him.

“I think it's quite clear to everyone that I'm not part of the plans at the club,” Bardsley told ITV Tyne-Tees. “So I'm just waiting and you know hopefully something will pop up in the near future. Yeah there has [been interest], so as I say, just waiting and hopefully something is just round the corner.”

Initially beginning life on Wearside brightly, Bardsley’s crowning moment came in 2011 when he was voted the club's Player of the Year.

However his time at Sunderland looks set to end on a sour note after he fell out with manager Paolo Di Canio towards the end of last season. Photographed lying on a casino floor covered in money, Bardsley was initially fined and dropped from the squad to face Tottenham on the last day of the season, before Di Canio confirmed he would not play for the club again under his tenure.
