Hull must up bid to buy Burnley's Austin

Burnley have rejected Hull’s offer for Charlie Austin and insisted the Premier League newcomers have to come up with a higher bid if they want to sign the prolific striker.

Hull manager Steve Bruce was reportedly willing to pay £4 million for the 24-year-old but Burnley, who raised £6.5 million by selling Jay Rodriguez to Southampton last summer, are thought to value Austin at closer to £7 million.

The former bricklayer scored 28 times for the Clarets last season, while Hull were promoted despite none of their players finishing last season with a goal tally in double figures.

Bruce, who has already signed Peterborough midfielder George Boyd and Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa, has made a goalscorer a priority in the transfer window.

But Burnley have denied Austin is on his way to the KC Stadium, saying in a club statement: “There have been reports from various media sources saying that Burnley FC are close to striking a deal for striker Charlie Austin. These reports are wide of the mark.

“Quite understandably there have been enquiries from a number of clubs but none have met Burnley’s valuation of the player. Charlie Austin remains part of the squad of Burnley as we prepare for next season’s matches.”

Austin has scored 45 goals in 90 games for Burnley since joining from Bournemouth in January 2011.
