Benteke 'will be in demand if Villa go down'

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke could leave if the club are relegated, reports have suggested, but his agent says he remains fully focused on trying to fire the Midlanders away from danger.

Reports have linked Benteke, 22, with a summer move to clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea if Paul Lambert’s Midlanders go down.

The Belgium international’s agent Kismet Eris was quoted as saying: “He has scored a lot of goals this season, and wants to give 100% between now and the end of the season.

“It is normal that, if you go to a club and do well, other clubs will show an interest. Christian has shown that he can play in England. So why not take the step up to the next level if the opportunity is there?”

Benteke has lit up the club’s otherwise dismal season with his double-figures goal tally, striking twice in away games at both Anfield and Goodison Park.

“At the end of the season, interested clubs will talk to Villa - but it has to be right for Villa, the buying club and Christian,” Eris said. “If all three parties are agreeable, then something could happen.

“But Villa will now ask a big price for Christian, much more than they paid for him, because Paul Lambert was the one who gave him his chance. None of the big clubs wanted to take a chance on Christian when he was still unknown.”

The agent said his client, who cost Villa £7 million from Genk in the summer, was concentrating only on firing Villa clear of trouble.

“Right now, his focus is on Villa and helping them stay in the Premier League,” he insisted. “He wants to repay Paul Lambert for the faith that has been shown in him.”
