Wednesday take Wickham on loan

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Connor Wickham on loan for a month.

Connor Wickham has been hampered by injuries this season
Wickham will be playing for the Under-21s at European Championships this summer

Wickham, 19, was an £8.1 million signing from Ipswich Town in 2011 but has found first team opportunities limited on Wearside, starting just one game so far this season. First linked with the striker in November, Wednesday have come back in for the player as they look to secure their Championship status.

The news follows confirmation from Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill that the club had fielded enquiries for Wickham, and that he would be allowed to leave on a temporary basis in order to aid his development.

"A couple of clubs have enquired about him and I've spoken to his agent as well," O'Neill told the Sunderland Echo. "It's one where it's an outfield player in a position where we've got a couple of options at this moment. Now that Connor has got a bit of momentum going, having played in the first team, we want to ensure that progress continues. And he's obviously anxious to play as many games as possible, so it's something I've looked at.

Having previously being unwilling to allow the England Under-21 international to leave, the arrival of Danny Graham in January has paved the way for Wickham to drop down to the Championship for first-team football.
