Michael Carrick pulls strings and gets 7/10 in final Man United appearance

Michael Carrick's career ends with a win as Marcus Rashford's strike would be enough to seal a win over Watford.
Manchester United captain Michael Carrick thanks his teammates, manager and family following his final game at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick's Manchester United career comes to an end as he receives a rousing send off from the Old Trafford crowd.
Jose Mourinho isn't about to celebrate Man United's second-place finish, but acknowledges the work the club put in throughout the season.

With second place wrapped up earlier in the week, Manchester United had nothing to play for on their final game of the season against Watford. Yet the fans enjoyed having the opportunity to say goodbye to Michael Carrick, playing at Old Trafford for the last time, and singing songs for Sir Alex Ferguson.

United showed decent attacking intent in the first half and found themselves 1-0 up after man of the moment, Carrick, played a defence splitting ball through to Juan Mata to gift Marcus Rashford with a tap in.

The second half wasn't anything special, with both sides creating half chances, but United were worthy of all three points. The game will probably be better remembered for the love and support shown to Ferguson and Carrick, but it was important to end the league campaign with a win ahead of the trip to Wembley for the FA Cup final next weekend.

Positives

Rashford will be glad to get on scoresheet ahead of the cup final. It's unlikely he will start against Chelsea but at least he will have put himself in Jose Mourinho's thoughts.

Negatives

The second half was pretty boring and showed a total lack of urgency, which was probably to be expected, but it didn't make for great entertainment.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- Supporters had wanted to see more youngsters in the squad but the players he chose got the job done.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Sergio Romero, 6 -- Dropped a simple cross early on but fortunately wasn't under any pressure so could collect the ball easily enough. Made up for this error with a point blank save from a header just before half-time.

DF Matteo Darmian, 5 -- Got forward on a few occasions but his crossing largely wasn't good enough. Probably his last appearance for the club.

DF Eric Bailly, 6 -- Lovely skill on the edge of the box which was appreciated by the fans. Solid at the back, with the exception of a late clearance that he sliced.

DF Marcos Rojo, 6 -- A bit reckless at times, with high boots and wild tackles, but made some important stops. It was a fantastic sliding challenge from him that denied what looked like a certain goal 10 minutes from time.

DF Ashley Young, 6 -- Made several important tackles. Booked for a late challenge in the second half.

MF Michael Carrick, 7 -- Fitting that it was him who played the inch perfect ball through to Mata to put United ahead. Decent display from him, with a couple of important interceptions, before being taken off to a standing ovation.

MF Scott McTominay, 6 -- Solid performance from the youngster. Worked hard, played a few decent balls forward and made an important clearance from the corner late on.

MF Daley Blind, 6 -- Lovely ball forward to create a chance for Rashford. Taken off for Ander Herrera.

FW Juan Mata, 7 -- Selflessly played in Rashford to score the opener. This should have been his second assist after putting in a great cross to Sanchez earlier on.

FW Alexis Sanchez, 6 -- Scuffed an early opportunity to score and looked desperate to create chances after that. Really hard working performance from him.

FW Marcus Rashford, 7 -- Pretty wild shot early on. Worked tirelessly and his effort paid off when Mata presented him with a tap in. Got in to good positions after that but was called offside several times.

Substitutes

DF Luke Shaw, 5 -- Replaced Young with half an hour to play. Didn't really do anything.

MF Ander Herrera, N/A -- Came on for Blind. Got in a good position to set someone up but pulled his cross behind those in the box.

MF Paul Pogba, N/A -- His first touch wasn't great.
