GPS systems in football 'a dangerous bit of equipment' - Plymouth boss

The use of GPS systems worn by players during matches has been called into question by Plymouth Argyle manager Derek Adams.

The devices are worn by athletes in order to track their movement and speed on the pitch, providing coaches with useful data to analyse performance.

The technology, which is widely used in rugby but is not as yet as common in football, was utilised by Wycombe Wanderers in their 2-1 loss at home to Plymouth in League Two on Saturday.

The fixture was, however, delayed by seven minutes due to concerns over the devices, which are positioned in the back of shirts, before it was confirmed the hosts were allowed to play.

"We noticed that they had this system sticking out of their back. If somebody goes in and heads it, then that's a dangerous bit of equipment," Adams told BBC Radio Devon.

"They [Wycombe] had provided an email to say that they had clarification from the League that they were able to start with it.

"But you're not allowed to wear rings or anything on the pitch."
