Ex-Liverpool player Dossena arrested over alleged Harrods shoplifting

Former Liverpool player Andrea Dossena has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of shoplifting at London department store Harrods, according to the BBC.

Dossena, 33, left Liverpool in 2010 to join Napoli and now plays for League One club Leyton Orient.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called to the Knightsbridge store on Tuesday.

"Police arrested a 33-year-old male and a 31-year-old woman on April 7 on suspicion of shoplifting at Harrods. They were taken to a west London police station," said a spokesman.

"Both the man and woman have been bailed to a date in late April, pending further enquiries."

Defender Dossena joined the Reds in 2008 and also had spells at Palermo and Sunderland before arriving at Orient in November 2014.

The club have yet to comment on the claims, but defender's representative Gary Sloane told the Liverpool Echo that Dossena and his wife, 31, were merely held after a misunderstanding involving their son.

He said: "It was a family shopping trip to Harrods and their little boy was carrying his own bag. He put a kids' book in there and it set the security alarms off as they left the shop.

"Andrea and his wife didn't have any ID with them so they had to go to the police station just to verify who they were."

Later on Wednesday, Monaco-based agent Federico Pastorello, who claims to be Dossena's current agent, tweeted an apparent denial from the player which stated:

"In regard to the news released today on some websites, I would like to make very clear that the story reported is unfounded.

"I was in Harrods with my wife and my son for some shopping and I forgot to pay a honey jar and some sliced meats we had previously ordered.

"While exiting the shop unaware of my oversight, I was stopped by security guards which then called the police as a standard routine procedure.

"As I wasn't carrying with me any identity documents at the time, I was asked to go to the nearest police station in order to be identified after which I left and went back home.

"Hence, I have now instructed my lawyers to protect my image with all necessary legal actions against those who reported this inaccurate legal actions against those who reported this inaccurate and tendentious news."
