Newcastle's DeAndre Yedlin out 1-2 weeks with thigh injury

Newcastle and United States international defender DeAndre Yedlin is set to miss the next 1-2 weeks with a thigh injury, according to manager Rafa Benitez.

The injury endangers Yedlin's chances of playing in two critical World Cup qualifiers at the end of the month against Honduras and Panama.

Benitez told England-based outlet Chronicle Live that Yedlin first sustained the injury on Feb. 28 in Newcastle's 2-1 win over Brighton, and felt the injury again in the 3-1 victory over Huddersfield four days later, despite only coming on in the 81st minute as a substitute.

"[Yedlin] was complaining, and you could see that maybe it would be one week or two weeks," Benitez told Chronicle Live about the defender's stint against Huddersfield. "He had a knock, maybe has a small tear."

Yedlin was then held out of Newcastle's 0-0 draw against Reading on March 7.

Yedlin has enjoyed an impressive first season with Newcastle, making 23 league appearances, most of them at right back, and scoring one goal. Yedlin joined the Magpies after making a summer move from Tottenham Hotspur. Yedlin spent the previous season on loan at Newcastle's archrivals, Sunderland.

Yedlin has made 43 appearances for the U.S. national team.
