Newcastle atop the table after late rally against Brighton; Aston Villa win

Newcastle came from behind to win 2-1 at Brighton and take a two-point lead at the top of the Championship table.

Glenn Murray's 14th-minute penalty saw Albion lead until the 81st minute, but the Magpies scored twice in the final nine minutes.

Mo Diame's equaliser was full of good fortune as the ball deflected off his foot and looped into the net.

And substitute Ayoze Perez converted Christian Atsu's cross as Rafa Benitez's side returned to the Championship summit at their hosts' expense.

Newcastle are eight points clear of third-placed Huddersfield in the race for automatic promotion.

Blackburn moved above Lancashire rivals Wigan at the other end of the table with a 1-0 win over Derby.

A Craig Conway penalty proved decisive as Blackburn moved to 33 points, the same as 21st-placed Bristol City. But Rovers have a game in hand.

Derby are now 10 points adrift of the play-off places.

City were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa, who won for a second-successive game to move nine points clear of the drop zone.

Jonathan Kodjia and Conor Hourihane were on target for Villa.
