Scott Arfield scores in first minute to keep Burnley at top of Championship

Scott Arfield struck after just 59 seconds to ensure Burnley stayed top of the table after beating Leeds 1-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday.

The visitors were made to pay for Chris Wood spurning two glorious second-half opportunities.

Bolton's relegation to League One was confirmed after they slumped to a 4-1 defeat at Derby.

Wanderers went into the match on the brink of the drop and the writing was on the wall when Johnny Russell gave the Rams an early lead.

Tom Ince doubled the advantage before half-time and Jacob Butterfield added a third with a long-range screamer midway through the second half.

Zach Clough pulled one back from the penalty spot but Russell grabbed his second and Derby's fourth as Bolton went down with a whimper.

Middlesbrough also boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a 1-0 win at home to Preston to lift them four points clear of third-placed Brighton.

George Friend teed up Albert Adomah for his eighth goal of the season and Boro held on during a nervy second half, with the former making a fantastic goal-line clearance to deny John Welsh an equaliser.

Sheffield Wednesday's playoff hopes suffered a surprise setback as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Bristol City.

Wednesday were 3-0 down by half-time after Joe Wildsmith's own goal was followed by a Bobby Reid strike and a Lee Tomlin penalty.

A second spot kick, converted by Jonathan Kodjia, added to Wednesday's misery and Richard O'Donnell's own goal was little consolation as their four-match winning run was abruptly ended.

Hull's automatic promotion hopes were effectively ended but they remain fourth thanks to an injury-time equaliser from Adama Diomande in a 2-2 draw at Huddersfield.

Jamie Paterson's first-half strike was cancelled out by Abel Hernandez before Harry Maguire's headed own goal restored Huddersfield's lead in the 90th minute, only for Diomande to rescue a point for the Tigers in stoppage time.

Playoff hopefuls Cardiff and Ipswich could not take advantage of teams above them dropping points as they were beaten by Fulham and Brentford respectively.

Ipswich were already trailing to a Sam Saunders goal when they had Luke Hyam sent off in first-half stoppage time for his reaction to a late challenge from Ryan Woods.

Lasse Vibe's second-half double then sealed Brentford's win, although it was marred by a serious injury to Alan Judge, and Liam Feeney's late penalty at least gave Ipswich fans something to cheer in a 3-1 defeat.

Cardiff slipped to a 2-1 loss at Fulham despite taking the lead through a Lex Immers header. Scott Parker levelled at the start of the second half and Emerson Hyndman's first goal for the Cottagers eased their relegation fears.

Rotherham continued their revival under Neil Warnock with a 4-0 victory in a crucial clash at struggling MK Dons.

Matt Derbyshire put the Millers ahead after just 54 seconds before a Leon Best penalty, a Kirk Broadfoot header and a Richie Smallwood stunner left the Dons nine points from safety with five matches to go.

Charlton are also running out of time to save themselves after slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

Jordan Cousins' second-half equaliser looked set to earn a point for the Addicks after Matt Phillips had given QPR the lead before substitute Nasser El Khayati curled a glorious shot into the top corner in stoppage time.

Clayton Donaldson and Ryan Shotton were on target in Birmingham's 2-0 win at Reading while Wolves and Blackburn shared a goalless stalemate at Molineux.
