Middlesbrough lose Championship top spot as Hull beat Fulham to go first

Middlesbrough were knocked off the top of the Championship as Nottingham Forest claimed their first-ever win at the Riverside Stadium.

Jamie Ward's second-half goal gave Dougie Freedman's in-form side a 1-0 victory, stretching their unbeaten run to 12 games.

It brings up Forest's first win on Teesside since a 2-1 victory at Ayresome Park in February 1993.

Boro's defeat meant Hull City returned to the top of the table as they ran out 1-0 winners over Fulham in a tight encounter at Craven Cottage.

Abel Hernandez's second-half penalty was enough to hand the Tigers maximum points after Moses Odubajo found his heels clipped by Lasse Vigen Christensen in the box with 10 minutes remaining.

James Wilson hit a second-half winner as Brighton climbed to third with a 2-1 home victory over 10-man Huddersfield.

Bobby Zamora put Albion on their way to a first home win in four games before Harry Bunn levelled in first-half stoppage time, but Manchester United loanee Wilson came off the bench to head home just before the hour mark.

Sheffield Wednesday's playoff hopes suffered a setback when they squandered a lead to draw 1-1 with Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

Wednesday went ahead early on when new permanent signing Gary Hooper was left free in the home area to score easily for a third successive match. Though Reading squandered a first-half penalty, they levelled 16 minutes from the end as defender Jake Cooper nodded home.

Cardiff winger Anthony Pilkington scored three times but only two were at the right end as Rotherham picked up an important point in their battle to retain their Championship status with a 2-2 draw.

Pilkington had given Cardiff the lead, but the Bluebirds found themselves trailing after a Joe Newell equaliser and Pilkington's own goal either side of half-time put Rotherham 2-1 up.

Pilkington made amends for his error by bringing the home side back on terms but neither team could find a winner.

Buoyant Birmingham improved their playoff prospects with an impressive 3-0 home victory over 10-man Ipswich.

A first win in nine encounters for Birmingham over Ipswich saw newcomer Will Buckley, on a month's loan from Sunderland, have a game to remember, scoring the opening goal and being involved in Ipswich's Jonathan Douglas receiving a straight red card.

Bolton defender Rob Holding scored his first senior goal as his bottom-of-the-table side boosted their survival hopes with a 3-1 win over fellow strugglers MK Dons at the Macron Stadium.

Charlton and Blackburn's winless league runs continued as the two strugglers battled out a 1-1 draw at The Valley.

Brentford ended a run of four straight defeats with a deserved 3-1 win over Preston at Deepdale.

Souleymane Doukara's goal stretched Leeds' unbeaten home run to six matches with a 1-0 victory over relegation threatened Bristol City.

Kenny Jackett insists his Wolves side can still make the playoffs after the 1-1 draw at QPR if he is allowed to make January signings. Sebastian Polter put QPR ahead at Loftus Road with a second-minute header, but the visitors hit back with a deflected equaliser two minutes into the second half.
