The American owners of Derby County have sold their stake in the club to local businessman Mel Morris.

The Championship club, who missed out on the playoffs following a collapse in form during the second half of the season, were taken over by a consortium fronted by former Detroit Pistons executive Andy Appleby seven years ago.

But within nine months of the deal going through, the Rams were relegated from the Premier League and have been in the Championship ever since.

Lifelong Derby fan Morris, who bought a 22 percent stake in the team earlier this year, is now the sole owner.

He thanked the outgoing owners for providing the "finance and leadership stability the club needed following the traumatic times which followed the 2007-08 season in the Premier League."
