Wigan, Millwall relegated to League One as Rotherham secure survival

Championship sides Millwall and Wigan Athletic were relegated to League One on Tuesday as Rotherham secured their survival with a 2-1 win against Reading.

Millwall and Wigan join bottom-side Blackpool as the three sides to drop down to the third division next season.

Wigan return to the division where they spent most of the 1980s and 90s, after a brief resurgence under owner Dave Whelan saw them play in the Premier League from 2005 to 2013, the year they also won the FA Cup.

Millwall's tenure in the Championship ends at five years.

Rotherham were already near safety before the Football League deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, but they overcame that setback with Tuesday's victory.

With the win, Rotherham went four points clear of Millwall and six above Wigan, wiping out their survival hopes ahead of this weekend's final fixtures.
