The recall is a result of a recent breach of club discipline at Barnsley, a source close to the club told ESPNFC.

Shea, 24, joined Barnsley on loan from Stoke City in January and made his debut for the Tykes against Birmingham City on New Year's Day. Making eight appearances while at the club, the U.S. international caused controversy earlier this month when he was seen to make an offensive gesture towards the club’s fans after Barnsley’s 5-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town.

Now set to return to parent club Stoke City three weeks ahead of schedule, sources have indicated the Yorkshire club took their decision following an internal investigation into the incident.

The club had already issued an apology for the behaviour of both Shea and teammate Stephen Dawson, with the 24-year-old tweeting: "I would like to unreservedly apologise for what happened at the end of the match. Although my actions were aimed at one person who was abusing a team-mate, I realise I should not have reacted in that way in the heat of the moment. I regret those actions and the offence it has caused. I did not intend to offend the Barnsley fans, who have shown tremendous support for the team. The best way I can show this and repay you, the fans, is with my performances on the pitch."
