Barnsley to probe Brek Shea incident

Barnsley is investigating United States international Brek Shea after allegations that Shea made an offensive gesture to their supporters.

Winger Shea is on loan at the Championship club from Stoke City and Barnsley are looking into an incident that occurred after their 5-0 Yorkshire derby defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday.

The club has already apologised to supporters for events after the final whistle at the John Smith’s Stadium when midfielder Stephen Dawson confronted fans.

While Shea was seen restraining Dawson, Barnsley are examining his actions to see if the American did anything wrong.

They have vowed to make a statement after Shea, who is on Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad to face Ukraine in Cyprus on Wednesday, returns to Oakwell and can answer the case against him.

A Barnsley club statement read: "In relation to an alleged incident which concerned Brek Shea, the matter is currently under investigation and a further statement will be made upon Brek’s return from international duty.

"Stephen Dawson has apologised unreservedly for his actions and will be making a substantial donation to Barnsley Hospice as way of an apology."

Shea, who joined Stoke from FC Dallas in January 2013, has only made five appearances for the Potters and is yet to start a Premier League game but has been a regular for his national team and scored the winning goal in last year’s Gold Cup final.

He has played eight times for Barnsley since the relegation-threatened Tykes borrowed him in January.
