Stuart Holden to have knee scan

Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden is to have a scan on the knee he injured in the United States’ 1-0 Gold Cup final win over Panama amid fears he faces a third lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Holden, 27, was hurt in the 19th minute of Sunday's match and will be assessed on Monday to discover the severity of the injury, Bolton said on their official website.

The problem is with the same knee he injured in a challenge with Manchester United's Jonny Evans in March 2011. He was sidelined for six months and needed surgery again that September after a brief comeback.

United States manager Jurgen Klinsmann admitted he feared the worst, saying after the game: "It looks like a very serious knee injury. I'm not a doctor, I can't confirm it. Hopefully it's not that bad, but it's not looking good right now."

Holden started all six of the USA's Gold Cup games, but has not begun a league match for Bolton in the last 26 months.

In that time, the former Houston Dynamos player has made only five appearances for the club, with his sole start coming in the Capital One Cup, plus four more on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Holden, who was signed by Owen Coyle in 2010, recently agreed a new deal to stay at the Reebok Stadium.
