Football League to close loan loophole

The Football League is set to tighten up rules concerning loan players when clubs meet in Vilamoura, Portugal on Friday.

Watford used 14 loan players last season, with 10 of them from Udinese. The Hornets exploited a loophole in the rule which allows only five loanees to be named in a matchday squad, a rule which did not apply to players signed from foreign clubs.

This meant they could essentially play as many loanees as they wanted from Udinese, with both clubs owned by the Pozzo family. The same applied to the Pozzo-owned Granada in Spain, who also lent players to Watford.

Officials from Football League clubs are almost certain to vote in favour of standardising the loan rule which will mean no more than five players, and four from one club, can be selected in a matchday squad no matter where they originate from.

Watford's loan players included the Championship Player of the Year, Matej Vydra.
