Wolves 'deserved' shock FA Cup win at Liverpool - Paul Lambert

LIVERPOOL -- Paul Lambert believes his Wolverhampton Wanderers side deserved to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup following Saturday's surprise victory in the fourth-round tie.

Richard Stearman gave Lambert's side the lead after just 52 seconds with a header from a free kick before Wolves doubled their lead with Andreas Weimann's goal off a rapid counter-attack.

Liverpool striker Divock Origi made it 2-1 in the 86th minute, but the Championship side held on to record their first-ever FA Cup win at Anfield.

"I thought we deserved it," Lambert told a news conference afterwards. "We really did. I think the first goal gave us something really to hang on to. But on the counter-attack, I thought we were incredible.

"Everybody knows how Liverpool want to play. They want to smother the ball, win it high up the pitch where they have shorter distance to the goal -- all the usual things. They want you to get into their game.

"I just thought the way to beat them was to play over the top and play counter-attack in certain aspects and try and press them when we can. I thought it worked incredibly well. I thought we were great the whole game. We deserved to go through."

Lambert was pleased with the resilience his team showed when Origi netted late on to set up a tense finale.

Asked whether it was a heart-in-mouth situation during the final stages, Lambert replied: "It was, because [goalkeeper] Harry [Burgoyne] has not had a save really. I think he had one real good save and that was with his foot. You know Liverpool are coming at you, and you know it's going to happen.

"But credit to them [the players], to a man, they were outstanding. There were four 18-year-olds in the whole squad, so it's great for their development and it's great for the future of the club that the younger ones learn that this is what you want to aspire to do.

"But the whole team, even the older lads, were fantastic."
