FA Cup: Liverpool beat Plymouth; Southampton, Newcastle both win

Liverpool emerged victorious from their FA Cup third-round replay with Plymouth Argyle, as Jurgen Klopp's team advanced with a nervy 1-0 win.

Plymouth held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw in the teams' first meeting on Jan. 8, forcing the Reds to play their second third-round replay in as many years in the FA Cup.

Klopp fielded a side featuring several substitute and reserve players, but were on the board in the first half against their League Two opponents.

Lucas Leiva got free at the near post following a free kick to head the visitors in front in the 18th minute.

The tense affair saw the hosts threaten regularly, but were unable to get on the scoresheet. Liverpool had a chance to seal things in the 86th minute from the penalty spot, but Divock Origi's attempt was saved by Luke McCormick.

Liverpool will host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round on Jan. 28.

In one of the day's two other replays, Newcastle United beat Birmingham City 3-1 to book passage to the next round.

A ninth-minute penalty from Matt Ritchie and a goal from Yoan Gouffran in the 34th minute to double the lead helped Rafa Benitez's men to the lead at the break.

David Cotterill pulled one back for the visitors in the 71st minute, but they couldn't find the equaliser to force extra time, and Ritchie added his second from the penalty spot in injury time to reach the final scoreline.

Southampton's Shane Long broke Norwich City hearts with an injury-time winner to help Claude Puel's men make it through with a 1-0 victory.

Long bundled home from close range for the winner after the first third-round match between the two ended 2-2 at Carrow Road.
