Former ref Mark Halsey slams Jon Moss appointment for FA Cup final

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has hit out at the appointment of Jon Moss for the FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa at Wembley on May 30.

Moss, 44, revealed his joy at being given the chance to referee the final, saying: "It's the realisation of a dream. For any referee it is the pinnacle of your career. This is the biggest game I will ever referee."

However, the official has come in for criticism in recent weeks over his performances and Halsey is unhappy that he has been handed such an important game.

"Seriously, Jon Moss at Wembley? I can't be having that. He's made too many high profile mistakes this season already," he wrote on kicca.com. "Even last weekend he missed two blatant penalties, one for Palace and one for West Brom."

Halsey called on FA chairman Greg Dyke to intervene and insisted that, if Moss is allowed to continue instead of Mark Clattenburg, then it will reflect badly on the Premier League.

"Greg Dyke has got to take a look at the appointment process for the FA Cup referee because, frankly, it's become a joke," he said. "It's quite clear Mark Clattenburg should be in charge. He's consistently our outstanding referee who time and time again proves himself on the biggest stage.

"Look at the job he did in the Champions League match between PSG and Barcelona recently, he won major plaudits for his performance - and rightly so.

"Simply, his face doesn't fit and the powers-that-be in this country are sending out a message to the rest of the world that they don't rate him.

"I reckon we'll be a laughing stock around the world. Pierluigi Collina is a huge admirer of Clattenburg's and he'll be wondering what on earth is going on over here when we can ignore the best man for the job for what looks like, in my opinion, political reasons.

"I really don't think the hierarchy want Clattenburg to go the European Championships next summer, they'd much prefer Martin Atkinson to represent us in France.

"This is their way of sending out a message to UEFA that Clattenburg isn't our top ref."
