FA Cup money from Man United tie gives Cambridge safety and stability

Cambridge United manager Richard Money has vowed not to squander the windfall from their FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

The League Two club lost 3-0 to Louis van Gaal's side in a fourth-round replay after having held them to a 0-0 draw at the Abbey Stadium.

Cambridge have banked around 1.5 million pounds from their cup run and Money intends to use the proceeds to secure the club's future for years.

They were a non-league club last year and Money said they exist partly because of the efforts of volunteers now, but he hopes to hire more professionals and improve their infrastructure.

"It means we can be safe and stable financially," he said in a news conference. "We are not going to have a spending spree in the summer and have one massive effort to be promoted.

"We need to grow. We need a new stadium and a new training ground or new facilities at the training ground. That is what the cup run will do for us.

"When you have been out of the Football League for nine years, there are not too many people left at the club. In the last two or three years, it has been run by a host of volunteers.

"Now we have six or eight, which is nothing compared to clubs like in League Two, let alone clubs like this. This allows us to grow commercially and grow quicker."
