Darren Fletcher: We've let boss down

Darren Fletcher feels Manchester United’s underachieving players are letting their supporters and manager David Moyes down, accepting it was a “massive blow” to be knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round.

Darren Fletcher leads off a dejected group of Man United players.
Darren Fletcher made his first start at Old Trafford since 2012 against Swansea.

• Okwonga: Late United fall
• Moyes: New signings needed

United, who are only seventh in the Premier League, suffered their fifth home defeat of the campaign as Swansea won 2-1 on Sunday with a last-minute header from Wilfried Bony.

And Fletcher, 29, who made his first start at Old Trafford since 2012, said the Red Devils’ display was unacceptable.

He told MUTV: “It’s a massive blow. Let’s not kid ourselves here, this is a really bad result, and there are a lot of angry, hurt players and we feel we have let the manager and the fans and everyone down by losing.

“It’s not good enough and we’re going to have to raise our performance levels.”

Fletcher said he understood the disappointment of the fans and  believes United have to produce a response when they face Sunderland in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal on Tuesday.

He added: “To be fair to them, they are really sticking by us, and that’s great to see as well and we’ve got to repay that.

“I think the players saw that today coming off, yeah there were a few boos but when we got to the Stretford End there was a lot of fans clapping and singing for United.

“So the players have got to really see that and know that they are behind us and put in performances for the fans, and the manager, and his staff, and it’s got to happen sooner rather than later. There’s no better way than a semifinal on Tuesday night.

“If you can’t lift yourself for that then it’s no good. We know it’s a quick turnaround but we need to really put in a performance now and show people that we are a good team and we are looking to win competitions.

"We’ve got a great opportunity, we’ve got a tough game away to Sunderland, we know that, but we’ve got to really recover quickly and really lift ourselves because that’s a massive game now.”
